sonnet 8

the foolish words of childhood proclaimed
our love, our tender hearts upon our sleeves,
as true and to forever be the same --
how easy, when you're young, to be deceived!

the seasons passed and time did turn and we,
abandoned to the world as we matured,
came slowly and reluctantly to see
our young selves' love was no longer assured.

we parted ways amicable, but still,
as dying embers lit your eyes with red,
I could not help but entertain a chill
of fear that I'd not see you -- fears unsaid.

we walked away, steps measured, no looks back
at flames burning to ashes, bright to black.
